About Scott Downey (singer/songwriter)
Scott was born in Stephenville Crossing Newfoundland on July 13th 1961. His father "Teeny" (Anthony Downey) was a well-known fiddler in the area. Scott first learned how to play guitar when he was 7 years old. He would visit his cousin Van Downey and play on his father's acoustic guitar. Scott is left-handed but he learned to play on his uncle's right-handed guitar by turning it upside down. This resulted in a "mirror image" of the strings and chord formations. Scott would play the guitar whenever he visited his uncle's house. He remembers his uncle stating, "Scottie must have been playing the guitar because it's out of tune again". Scott remembers how people reacted when they saw him playing the guitar upside down, especially when he started to develop some chord progressions and started finger picking. He stated, "Once I was in a guitar store and was playing one of the guitars. Soon people started gathering around and watching me play. They didn't think that it was possible to play the guitar upside down. Sometimes I would say "You should see me play when I can play the "right" way with the strings reversed. In fact, I could not play a chord the "right" way to save my life. This situation happened whenever Scott went into a guitar store and began to play. He stated, "one of my musician friends said that I was a freak of nature". If Scott ever produces a CD the title will be, "The left handed upside down guitar player".
Scott played in a few rock bands during his teens including two bands from Stephenville, Crystal Pyramid (1980) and TUROK (1981). While playing with TUROK during a gig at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), he met his wife Cathy. He decided to quit the band and go to MUN. He eventually married Cathy in 1988 and successfully completed two degrees, a B.Sc (Hons) in Psychology at MUN and an M.Ed in Applied Psychology from the University of Toronto. During his University studies he joined his third and final band called Spectrum (1985-1986). In 1993 he did several benefit concerts (solo acoustic) for CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorders). In 1994 he released a cassette tape titled "In Your Arms", which included 6 original songs with the proceeds going to CHADD. Too busy to be involved in a Rock band Scott continued to write songs and develop his original guitar playing style. He satisfied his interest in performing by singing Karaoke whenever possible. He entered the Newfoundland Karaoke Idol I competition in 2004 and was able to capture 2nd place. He entered Newfoundland Karaoke Idol II and won the competition. He was selected to be a judge for Karaoke Idol IV along with the winners of Karaoke Idol I and III. The show will be aired on NTV in February 2006.
Scott presently works as a Child Psychologist at the Janeway Child Health Center and teaches Taekwon-Do with his wife Cathy. They have been teaching Taekwon-Do in St. John's and Mount Pearl for the past 15 years. Visit their Taekwon-Do web site at www.kick.nf.net He is also an avid runner and is a member of the Nautilus Running Club in St. John's for the past two years. He ran the Tele 10 in 2005 in 67minutes. He has been married for 18 years and has two children, Brandon (age 13) and Tyler (age 15).
Now that his children have grown Scott is interested in performing an occasional live gig. His first gig in 20 years will be at Mama Soulas (Bull and Finch night club) on Friday and Saturday night, February 24th and 25th 7-10pm. The club is very quaint with a fireplace, large screen TV, and comfortable seating. They also serve some of the best food in St. John's.
